In honor of the Best Dad in the World, I decided to compile a Bibliographical list from YouTube video, lecture series, stuff from Wikipedia, and many other sources to semi-represent the things he studied and was into.  He was a self made researcher and linguistic.  I never even heard of linguists but I always LOVED traveling, languages, music, and cultures.  I can’t say when daddy first started collecting magazine and newspaper clippings and such, but every since I can remember, he always had a very eclectic and well rounded taste.  He listened to everything from deep country blue grass to classical (which I personally hate).  And he’d look at everything from baseball to the ballet – although mom said he just like seeing the women dance.   I guess I obviously took after him in this respect.  I love all types and forms of music, I love visiting museums, and learning about cultures.

I remember when daddy would open up his dictionary and randomly pick a word.  And he’d spend at least 30 minutes ranting about that word.

“Lotion.  Hmmp.  Why is lotion pronounced like that.  Shouldn’t it be pronounced like Lo – Tee – On?  Or how about bla bla bla?  You know, this is obviously French in origin.  How do the French pronounce lotion?”

And for about a good 30 minutes, he’d rant on and on about some random word.  He would even run my mom out the living room, as much as she yaps her mouth.  And I’d be ready to jump out the closest window from torture!  Somehow all of that annoying ranting about word etymology got me into linguistics – and I didn’t even know what linguistics was.  I don’t think my dad fully did either.

Well Daddy, this one’s for you!

        Language & Linguistic Videos

•         The Story of Human Language

There is this excellent video series by John H. McWhorter called The Story of Human Language.  Released by The Teaching Company, it is an fantastic lecture series consisting of 36 audiovisual course.  I rented this series at least 3 times from my local library and it’s one of my favorites! http://www.teach12.com/store/professor.asp?ID=304

•       Speech versus language

It is necessary to make a minor distinction between speech and language. Speech involves producing sounds from the voicebox. Talking birds, such as some parrots, are able to imitate human speech with varying ability. However this ability to mimic human sounds is very different from the acquisition of syntax. On the other hand, the deaf generally do not use speech but are able to communicate effectively using sign language, which is considered a fully-developed, complex, modern language. What this implies is that the evolution of modern human language required both the development of the anatomical apparatus and also neurological changes in the brain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origins_of_language

Unlike linguistics which kind of winged onto me, I always loved languages.  I never really was into Sesame Street, but they would always introduce Spanish words.  I personally taught myself the sign language alphabet when I was around 6 years old.  My mom took me over her friends house to gossip for 6 hours.  I was soooooo beyond board, I basically stared at her wall in between kicking that annoying rat/ chiwawa from my damn ankles that he kept attacking!  She so happened had the sign language alphabet taped up on her wall so as my mom yapped, I basically taught myself sign language.  And you know what, I still remember it to this day!  Yea!!  Smile

Well here are some really nice American Sign Language lessons from youtube.   http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sign+language+lessons&search_type=&aq=3&oq=sign+l   This is also a very interesting signed video about basic Christianity and the bible.  It even has someone speaking and verbally telling the story in the background for you to follow along with the signs.  It is quite fast if you are not good at signing.  It is also a very interesting video with very graphic and vivid pictures.  Whoever created this video series did an excellent job, for these are not just a great way to practice your sign language, but these videos are also extremely interesting!

Oops, sorry dad.  Well I’m sure he liked languages too.  I mean, how can you like historical linguistics if you’re not into languages?  And daddy did take a course at the local night school for drawing and Spanish so that does say something.

Anthropology and Human Facial/Racial Recognition

I guess like me, daddy was exceptionally good with recognizing what a person was.  Some races are easy to distinguish, but others most Americans just put into giant huge piles.  I also became somewhat good with recognizing accents.   And like with racial features, some accents are very easy to guess but others are not.  Nonetheless, folks are always surprised when I correctly guess where they or their parents were from.  I am just as surprised myself!  I guess this goes along with my love for geography.  At one point (probably when we had to learn all the capitals to the Spanish speaking nations in my Spanish 101 class) I learned all of the countries and many of their capitals on the earth.  I just LOVE relief maps and earth science!  Then again, I love science.  Oops, this is about my dad.  Well I’m sure he enjoyed science as well.

This is a kind of cool machine I’d like to try myself

This is a somewhat interesting (and somewhat biased) site on the various races of man.  It is interesting because it has photos from people from all over the world.

Forensic facial reconstruction (or forensic facial approximation) is the process of recreating the face of an unidentified individual from their skeletal remains through an amalgamation of artistry, forensic science, anthropology, osteology, and anatomy. It is easily the most subjective - as well as one of the most controversial - techniques in the field of forensic anthropology. Despite this controversy, facial reconstruction has proved successful frequently enough that research and methodological developments continue to be advanced. Here is a really long but excellent Wik article on race.  http://psychology.wikia.com/wiki/Race

!Self Help – How to SPEAK Your Destiny!

The Law of Faith/Attraction & THE POWER OF THOUGHTS AND THE SPOKEN WORD

This is something that I myself am intrigued in.  To my knowledge, my dad never got into this.  Although he would occasional go to church to hear a preacher and he really enjoyed listening to gospel music and looking at church on TV, for he was not super religious.  I guess I’m more like my dad.  Although, I always believed in a creator and Christ, I’m not some religious fanatic – and if you happen to be whatever religion you are, then you do you.
